8/3/2008COMMONWEALTH GAMES

I am a local person living in the tollcross area and have been for many years.  I am a big supporter of the tollcross area being involved in the Commonwealth games through events being held in the Tollcross Park Leisure Centre.  Unfortunately I have been recently concerned about the lack of local involvement of members of the tollcross community in planning and implementation of the proposed event which will have a huge impact (very positive one) on our area.   Our views are just as important as all the officers who are leading the current structure for the Games.

Does anyone else from tollcross have a view on this and does anyone know of any local group which has been set up to take this matter forward.

Toll cross leisure could be a good center if it was better run. The changing areas are bleak and equipment is always out of order.

Young people in the east end through tthe urban fox programme are linking in to a project being facilitated by Culture and Sport and based at Shettleson Halls. They are researching the countries of the Commonwealth to start a process of educating them on the forthcoming Commonwealth Games. We would like to be part of the on going development programme of involving young people and raising expectations on what it means to them. After all we have to instill a belief in them to raise their attainment to achieve or take part in the games and associated projects. the urban fox programme www.urban-fox.org

I disagree with Al Hendry's comments on the running of Tollcross Leisure Centre. I think the running of the centre is first class, and the staff very helpful. As for the changing areas I think the only thing that's wrong with the changing areas is they are a bit too small. William Sommerville.

I am aware there are proposals to extend the leisure centre to provide training facilities for swimmers and there is no doubt the infrastructure improvements and general redevelopment of Dalmarnock and Parkhead will have a positive impact on local amenity and property values. I am not aware of any local forum dedicated to assessing the impact / benefits to the area from hosting the games and I'm pretty sure the community council's will be approached if local input is required.
