7/3/2008Phone mast fury
Springboig Bowling Club bosses want to rent part of their site to mobile firm O2 to raise funds for the cash-strapped club.
The campaign group has gathered around 200 letters of protest against the mast in Springboig Avenue in Glasgow which would be almost 60ft tall.
And they insist they will physically block workmen from putting up the structure if the mast wins approval from the planning committee at Glasgow City Council.
The mast is planned to replace another in the area which is being moved to make way for building work.
Campaigners claim the new mast will net Springboig Bowling Club more than £20,000.
Mother-of-five, Lorraine Milne, 45, lives opposite the proposed site.
She said: "We were told the club would get £20,000 for the mast going up then after that they were supposed to get so much money every year on top of that.
"I'm really concerned about the health issues surrounding these masts. They say they can prove there's no cancer issues, but who can be certain?"
Janice Dowling, 57, of Springboig, who is registered disabled and suffers from a heart condition, has been at the forefront of the campaign against the O2 mast.
She said: "Everybody is raging and they are frightened for their health. We have gathered almost 200 letters of objection against the mast. We also tried to arrange a meeting with O2, but they refused to come to a public meeting we organised."
No-one at Springboig Bowling Club was available to comment on the mast plans.
A spokesman for mobile giant O2 confirmed the firm had been approached by club officials but would not divulge how much cash the club could make from any deal.
He said: "We have an existing site which is going to have to move as a result of building work in the area. We are trying to find a new site which will have less of an impact.
"I completely appreciate people's concerns, but I would have to say in defence that all research carried out has shown that there is no impact to health and masts are safe."
A council spokesman. said: "The application will be considered on its own merits."
